Last week I had mentioned in These Five Senses, my niece was going to help me write and record this week’s song. Unfortunately time got away from us during her short visit, and we were unable to complete the song. However, I am very excited to present to you, I Can Talk!
The melody of this song seemed to have fallen into my lap. I was at the library the other day working on some graduate school reading and homework, and I decided to take a short break to check out the new CD’s. I found With a Smile and a Song by Doris Day. As I was driving home, Pillow Talk came on. I had never heard the song before, and I immediately fell in love with the style and melody. I couldn’t get it out of my head! So much so, that when I went to record the other song I had written this week, I couldn’t stop thinking about that catchy melody.I Can Talk was born!
This song falls inline with Point and Press the Switch and Point and Press the Screen. It is meant to encourage the use of language, albeit vocal or with the use of a communication device. In the recording, I only use the word voice, but device could easily be inserted.
When using this song, I would break it up into parts to be more appropriate in a session. The first section can be a great filler between the sections where specific words or phrases are encouraged. The bridge and final chorus where the “you” in the song changes over to “I” can be a great way to wrap up the intervention.
I would love for you to try this song out! I know when you listen to the recording, you will see why I fell in love with the melody! You can find the original song here, and the chord chart here.
“I Can Talk”
Adapted from “Pillow Talk” by Doris Day
Lyrics by Emily Sevcik, MT-BC
You can talk
Others listen when you use your voice to talk, talk, talk
I wonder how it would be
If you used your voice (device) and talked with me
Can you say “Hi”?
Can you say “Yes”?
Can you say your name?
You can talk
You can talk
Others listen when you use your voice to talk, talk, talk
I wonder how it would be
If you used your voice and talked with me
Can you say “Dog”?
Can you say “No”?
Can you say “Bye”?
All these people talk all around me
Talk all around me
Talk all around me
All these people talk all around me
Talk about how very special and great I am
I should join in
I can talk
I can talk
Others listen when I use my voice to talk, talk, talk
You and I both agree
How great a conversation would be
