What Is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is a recognized health care profession that uses creative music interventions to attain social, motor,communication, emotional, or academic goals.  Ongoing research shows music therapy is an effective treatment modality for people with Autism, Developmental Disabilities, emotional disorders, Alzheimer’s, terminal illnesses, and Learning Disabilities. Additionally, music therapy can help the hospitalized or those in long-term facilities cope with illness and isolation.

What is a Music Therapist?

A music therapist has completed one of more than 70 American Music Therapy Association approved academic programs. In addition, a 6-month clinical internship follows the completion of coursework. In order to practice, it is required to pass the board certification exam administered by Certification Board of Music Therapists. The credential MT-BC (Music Therapist- Board Certified) is then designated for use and requires continuing education to maintain the 5-year certification cycle
